Most students take Karate (Martial Arts) for physical fitness, to get in shape, followed by coordination and then self-defense.
Unlike most “traditional” karate schools, we have taken a different approach. First, our curriculum, though based on old school training, takes a modern approach. Unlike traditional Japanese-based systems, our students learn self-defense concepts and must also learn one of three weapons (Tonfa, Nunchucku or Sai). This training begins on the first day. We believe the weapon is a tool that trains the hands to work even without the tool.
About me…
My name is Sean Schroeder. I began studying Karate under Sensei Noel Smith, 8th Dan Shorin-ryu Shorinkan when I was 7. 5 years ago, I earned my black belt, and for nearly 6 years I learned how to teach Okinawan Shorin-ryu karate and weapons (Kobudo). I have dedicated my time to learning the small things that make the difference. I still continue to refresh my training regularly with my Sensei.
On October 19, 2021, we opened Coastal Virginia Karate. Classes will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 7pm to 8pm. Arrive 15 minutes early, as class will start promptly. What we do not offer is babysitting, day care, pizza parties, birthday parties or promotion ceremonies. What you will experience is a focused workout centred around self-defense. If you are looking for fun and games, this training may not be for you.
