Karate provides a host of value to your body, mind and spirit (Heart), it’s like Yoga 2.0.
Karate has built onto it many aspects found in Yoga. Just as Yoga has postures, Karate has various stances, such as zenkutsu-dachi, forward stance, Shiko-dachi horse stance and Neko-dachi to name three. As in Yoga these stances serve specific functions from balance, coordination, strengthening, developing speed.
In addition to strengthening the body’s muscles and developing flexibility, it also works the respiratory system, through kata not only do the steps, bunches and blocks have to be controlled and timed, but also the breathing.
Unlike Yoga, Karate teaches one to handle a physical assault, in other words, how to fight or respond to an attack. What originally seemed like simple yoga stretches and exercises eventually become steps to avoid being hit, and to aid in blocking or receiving a punch, in boxing it may be eqivelant to “foot work”.
A karate student who takes the art seriously, and devotes time and energy to the art in, and outside, the dojo will begin to realize improvements in his body, muscle definition, speed and sharpness of mind.
