Virginia Beach Karate School
We started Cova Karate with one aim, to effectively teach Okinawan Based Karate using modern teaching approaches.
Since the early 1970s, it has taught Karate using what we call a Teacher-Centric model. The entire classes listen to the teacher, while following the teachers led. In Karate, this teacher-centric approach is easily applied to teaching Kata and other predefined “forms”. Most Karate classes simply teach Kata/Forms. The more of these forms that are memorized, the higher in the ranks the student progresses. Because the students model the instructor, they expect the students become a mirror of the instructor.
Cova Karate has taken a different approach. Our instructors will model an idea, then break the students into small groups to allowing them to work together to learn the concept, all the while the instructor is walking around making minor corrections. The key is to allow the students to work together, analyzing their movements. We accept mistakes will occur. These mistakes are the learning blocks. However, it is not the instructor who ends up pointing out the mistake; it is the other students. This allows each student the same learning experience and to make adjustments in real-time. Towards the end of the training, there is an open discussion about lessons learned. Identifying the mistakes and what steps they are taking to correct them.
CoVa Karate realizes that not each student is built the same. Some are taller, while others are shorter. Some students are fast and nimble, while others are solid and immovable. Every student has to learn to capitalize on their assets, and how to use their abilities against others.
Use this form to schedule 2 free classes, just like our teaching method our trail program is unlike other schools as well. You will not be placed in a private class. Instead, you will be embeded in the class and train along side our students. We want you to experience what we offer, not a sales pitch..
